Council Reply to Notre-Dame Fire Hall Debenture

Council feels that a response needs to be made concerning the incorrect information that is circulating in our community regarding the proposed construction of a fire hall in Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes.

The Municipality of Lorne consists of four fire stations that are located in Swan Lake, Somerset, St. Leon and Notre Dame de Lourdes. Funding to maintain fire service is borne by all ratepayers through taxation or borrowing.

Last year Somerset fire station took delivery of a new fire pumper that cost $589,000.00. That cost was shouldered by all ratepayers in Lorne Municipality through a fire reserve fund. When Swan Lake Fire Station needs a new pumper, the cost will be paid by all ratepayers in Lorne Municipality. Current cost of a new pumper is over 1 million dollars.

It is incorrect to state that Notre Dame Fire Station does not serve our community. All stations work under a mutual aid agreement. For example, if Swan Lake is on a call other stations cover our area if there is another call and vice versa. All stations work as team.

Stations could have specialized equipment to share. Swan Lake Station has a high-pressure compressor to fill the air bottles for all our stations. Notre Dame Sation will have a specialized washing machine to wash the contaminants from fire suits. Some of these contaminates are carcinogenic.

The proposed fire hall in Notre Dame will have to meet a specific fire code pertaining to fire halls. Roofs, walls and doors must be rated to withstand a tornado. It will become a vital part of the emergency response plan.

Council believes opposition to the building plan is a disservice to all members of who willingly give the treasure of their time to not only provide fire protection but also attend vehicle accidents and other accidents within our communities.
