Known for Its Splendid Windmills
Saint-Léon
The community of Saint-Léon is located near Somerset in the Municipality of Lorne, surrounded by the gently rolling hills and fertile farmlands of southwestern Manitoba. The region is bordered by the Pembina Hills to the east, the Tiger Hills to the north and west, and the Pembina Valley to the south, offering a landscape that is both rich in natural beauty and agricultural productivity.
A proud agrarian community, Saint-Léon is home to one of the oldest churches in the region—alongside that of nearby Saint-Alphonse—and also serves as the headquarters of the oldest Franco-Manitoban co-operative still in operation today.
Agriculture remains at the heart of life in Saint-Léon, with local farms producing oilseeds, grains, pork, dairy, as well as poultry that contribute to the local economy. In 2005, the area gained national recognition with the development of the Saint-Léon Wind Farm, a 99 MW renewable energy project capable of powering approximately 41,000 homes. This initiative not only marked a milestone in sustainable energy for Canada but also brought significant economic growth to the community.
Saint-Léon is also known for a unique natural phenomenon — the annual tiger salamander migration, which occurs in late August. During this time, hundreds of these small amphibians can be seen crossing Main Street, delighting residents and visitors alike.
Whether exploring its agricultural heritage, learning about renewable energy, or witnessing nature’s wonders up close, Saint-Léon offers a fascinating glimpse into rural Manitoba’s charm and innovation.
